Components of the Knowledgebase

The information systems that are being implemented through the project include the Knowledgebase, Planning Tools and Forecasting systems.  The Knowledgebase is comprised of the following physical sub-components:

Spatial database

A Geonode spatial database has been developed to house the main spatial data repository.  The entire database is hosted on the internet.  This arrangement thus avoids manual transfer of large spatial data sets between LVBC and Partner State stakeholders and provides functionality to selectively share and exchange data with stakeholders.

Interactive Atlas

An atlas of the Lake Victoria Basin provides a user-friendly summary of socio-economic, environmental and water resource management issues to catchment stakeholders, and serves as a primer for stakeholders who are participating in the basin planning processes. (DEMO only - World Terrestrial Ecosystems, hosted on ArcGis Online)

E-learning

A web-based E-learning platform to provide self-paced courses on IWRM related topics. The objectives of the platform are to:

  • Provide learning material on the management, maintenance and use of the water information systems that are being established by LVBC
  • Provide short courses on skills that can be delivered online

Document repository

A repository of more than a 1000 documents spanning a wide range of relevant topics, including water resources assessments, sectoral strategies and development plans, masterplans, policies, bills, acts and rules, research papers.  The documents are hosted in a searchable online database from where documents can be retrieved and downloaded.

Survey platform

An online survey platform to elicit LVBC stakeholder views and feedback on a range of topics of interest.

Helpdesk

A helpdesk for registered users of the system.  Support requests can be submitted.  Requests are actioned by LVBC system administrators
